This area of outstanding natural beauty with deep gorges, caves and conifer forests is dominated by the impressive knife edge of the Piatra Craiului, a sheer limestone ridge which rises over 2,000 metres above the valley floor.

Piatra Craiului National Park is noted for being one of the most bio-diverse regions in Romania, and is home to wolf, brown bear and lynx, along with nearly 300 butterfly species, 17 species of bat, and numerous birds, reptiles, fungi and plants.

The flourishing ecosystem in this part of the Carpathians is testament to the management and protection of the park. The first section of the park was established in 1938 and has continued to expand over the decades, providing a safe haven for a huge range of species, as well as exquisite trekking trails.
